Exploring the Natural Beauty of Pearls

Pearls have long been seen as a symbol of femininity, beauty, and charm. That’s why these fabulous gemstones serve as the star of a number of pieces of fine jewelry. From rings and bracelets to necklaces and earrings, pearls can add a touch of glamour to nearly any look. Here’s a closer look at the breathtaking natural beauty of pearls:

How Pearls Are Created

Pearls are among the most unique pieces found in fine jewelry stores. Unlike other metals, jewels, and stones that are found in various parts of the earth, pearls are found inside of living creatures. Mollusks produce pearls in order to protect themselves from potentially harmful foreign substances.

When a foreign substance enters a mollusk, it can find its way between the mollusk’s shell and its mantle, or the part that produces the shell. To prevent this foreign object from harming the mollusk, the mantle produces layers of calcium carbonate that then surround, coat, and cover the foreign object.

Natural vs. Cultured Pearls

Because natural pearls are formed only when a foreign object enters a mollusk, they are actually quite rare, which is why cultured pearls are more commonly used. Pearl harvesters can implant foreign items into a mollusk to ensure pearl production. These pearls are not natural, but they are still created by the same mollusk protection process.

Pearl Shapes and Colors

While many imagine a traditional off-white sphere, pearls actually come in a variety of shapes and colors. A pearl’s color is determined by a number of factors, including the color of the mollusk and the type of water the pearl grows in. Pearls can be found in shades of white, black, silver, gold, and even pink! A pearl’s shape is also determined by these factors. Round pearls are the most valuable. Other shapes include oval and teardrop.
