Designer Arpita Navlakha was aware early on that she would create jewelry as it has always been a part of her everyday life. Her Childhood enthrallment would develop into an internationally worn brand, sought out by celebrities, stylists and editors, and carried in fine retail establishments, called SUTRA.
Q: What led you to jewelry design?
A: I grew up in a family of jewelers in Mumbai. My father would take me to work with him and I can remember early on being fascinated by gemstones. I knew then i wanted to grow up and create beautiful things.
Q: Describe Your Style.
A: I would say that my design style is a fusion of traditional Indian silhouettes inspired by my heritage and mixed with my love of contemporary fashion-forward design. In each Sutra piece you are able to see where romance and whimsicality meet revolution and ingenuity.
Q: What is your most proud moment?
A: This year marked the Ten Year Anniversary of Sutra. When I look back on this journey there have been many amazing moments but to see what we’ve been able to create and evolve into over the last decade is incredible. If you’re lucky enough to wake up every day and do what you love surrounded by love, you’ll never tire.
Q: What is something people would be surprised to learn about you?
A: I am actually an introvert. My jewels are like my alter-ego. I think about the different kind of women and personalities that they are going to adorn. It’s a creative outlet for me to live vicariously though my pieces.
Q: Favorite Sutra Piece and Why?
A: My favorite piece changes. I have so many. One that is particularly meaningful to me is my Paraiba cocktail ting. The gem is the exact color of the water in the Maldives where my husband and I honeymooned and later took out daughter back. It brings me joy to see it and remember those moments.
Q: Theme song?
A: Anything from Calvin Harris. He has feel good music. The same way I want people to feel when they pull out their Sutra pieces.
Q: Must Follow Instagram Account?
A: I love @WHOWOREWHAT because I don’t have time to watch TV or award shows and it gives a great recap of most red carpet events and celebrity outings.
Q: Savory or Sweet?
A: Savory! I love popcorn. It’s my go to healthy snack.
Q: Favorite non-jewelry accessory?
A: Hands down a cross-body bag! I love them. When you’re busy with work and kids, it’s the best thing ever to have your purse attached to you.
